]]>That’s big news, of course. But then, the compact Prius c has been a newsmaker since it joined the Toyota line. A redesigned front fascia, rear bumper, side rocker panels and blacked-out rear spoiler give the 2017 Prius c a big infusion of sporty attitude. All grades now also roll on standard alloy wheels.
A Big Safety Announcement from Toyota
Toyota Safety Sense-C is designed to help address three key areas of driver assistance: preventing or mitigating frontal collisions, helping maintain driving within their lane, and enhancing road safety during nighttime driving. Toyota plans to make automatic emergency braking standard on nearly all models by the end of 2017. That will put Toyota (and Lexus) four years ahead of the model-year 2022 industry target announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Urban? Suburban? Yes.
One doesn’t need to live in a congested urban area to get why the “c” in Prius c stands for “city.” Yet, even out in the ‘burbs, one can appreciate the vehicle’s 158.7-inch length, which makes it a shoe-in for those “compact only” parking spaces located so conveniently near mall entrances.
Thanks to clever design, the Prius c makes great use of the space at hand. The 35-inch rear legroom and 17.1 cu. ft. cargo volume (with rear seatbacks up) let you take friends to the mall in comfort, and carry home everyone’s packages with ease. The bottom line is that the Prius c provides a lot of cabin space while taking up little road space.
Smart packaging also makes the Prius c highly maneuverable, thanks to optimal location of the compact gasoline engine, transaxle and power-control unit. Locating the hybrid battery and fuel tank beneath the rear seat puts their mass within the car’s wheelbase, a boon to weight distribution and handling agility. The body structure’s high torsional rigidity allows the suspension to be more optimally tuned for a smoother ride and more agile handling. The Prius c rides on standard 15-inch alloy wheels on all grades. A 16-inch aluminum alloy wheel option with P195/50R16 tires is available for the Prius c Four.
In the city, suburbs or wide-open spaces, the standard single LED projector low- and high-beam headlights and LED tail and brake lights give you a bright road ahead. Exterior color choices like Absolutely Red, Blue Streak Metallic and Tangerine Splash Pearl may not be ideal for those in the Witness Protection Program.
Prius c Hybrid Technology
Toyota optimized the size and weight of its hybrid technology for the Prius c platform, but that doesn’t mean it left anything out. The system integrates a gasoline engine, an electric motor within a Continuously Variable Transaxle, a nickel-metal hydride battery, a power control unit (inverter), a DC-DC converter and a step-up converter. A hybrid control computer governs the seamless application of gasoline engine and electric power depending on driving demands and selected drive mode.
The Prius c’s SULEV (Tier 2 Bin 3)-rated 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine utilizes an Atkinson cycle to help increase efficiency. By itself, the engine produces 73 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque, contributing to a total hybrid system output of 99 hp. The hybrid system also yields excellent fuel efficiency with an EPA estimated MPG of 48 city/43 highway/46 combined.
Like today’s luxury and sport models, the Prius c offers different drive modes to affect performance response. Normal mode works for everyday driving. ECO reduces overall energy consumption by governing the climate control system and throttle operation to help enhance vehicle efficiency. Under certain conditions EV Mode allows the Prius c to be driven solely by electric power for under one mile while remaining below 25 mph. That’s useful when navigating one of those huge mall parking lots, for example.
Compact on Size, Big on Safety
The addition of the Toyota Safety Sense C system to all 2017 Prius c models is designed to help drivers avoid hazards on the road. But Toyota also built the Prius c to help protect passengers. Extensive use of lightweight, high-strength steel contributes to the vehicle’s ability to absorb and disperse impact energy, helping to enhance occupant safety.
The body covering that structure slips through the air with a low 0.28 coefficient of drag, the result of extensive aerodynamic features. The Prius c’s lower-body styling is wider below the beltline, featuring sculpted rear flares that express an athletic stance.
The 2017 Prius c is equipped with nine airbags and, features the standard Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop technology.
Toyota Safety Sense-C (TSS-C) featuring Automatic Emergency Braking
The Toyota Safety Sense-C system standard in the 2017 Prius c combines a trio of driver assist technologies anchored by automatic emergency braking.
Pre-collision System (PCS), which operates at vehicle speeds of approximately seven to 85 mph, is designed to use a camera and laser beam to detect the vehicle ahead. If PCS determines there is a possibility of a collision, it uses audio and visual alerts to prompt the driver to take evasive action and brake. If the driver notices the hazard and applies the brakes, PCS may provide additional braking force using Brake Assist. If the driver does not brake in a set time, and PCS determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with another vehicle is extremely high, the system may automatically apply the brakes, helping reduce speed by approximately 19 mph in order to help the driver lessen the impact and in certain cases avoid a collision. The operational range of automatic braking covers speeds at which at least 80 percent of rear-end collisions occur (approximately seven – 50 mph).
Lane Departure Alert (LDA) is designed to use a camera to detect visible white and yellow lane markings in front of the vehicle and the vehicle’s position on the road. If LDA determines that the vehicle is starting to unintentionally deviate from its lane, the system alerts the driver with an audio and visual alert.
Automatic High Beam (AHB), using an in-vehicle camera to help detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of vehicles traveling ahead, automatically switches between high and low beams as appropriate.
Toyota Value in Four Grades
The Prius c cabin looks as sporty as the exterior and of course delivers familiar Toyota value. The four model grades make it easy to choose the ideal Prius c for any budget or taste.

With all that great tech and high fuel economy in the Prius c, it seems only logical that Best Buy’s Geek Squad will dispatch more than 1,000 of the vehicles – fully decked out as the new Geekmobile – nationwide. Prius c offers enough cargo space to shuttle just about anything a Geek Squad agent might need, whether optimizing a home theater system or improving Wi-Fi performance or installing a security solution.
Peace of Mind Warranty Protection
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for eight years/100,000 miles.

]]>Starting today, Best Buy’s Geek Squad will dispatch more than 1,000 of the vehicles – fully decked out as the new Geekmobile – nationwide.
With more than five million house calls a year, Geek Squad Agents annually drive an estimated 12.6 million miles (or roughly 20.3 million kilometers, 100.8 million furlongs or 4.2 million leagues). That’s a lot of road (and gas), making the hip hatch’s EPA estimated city fuel economy of 53 mpg particularly attractive. The Prius c’s SULEV (Super ultra-low emissions vehicle) rating also is appealing given Best Buy’s commitment to reduce its own carbon emissions.
Geek Squad rolled out in 2004 as the first national computer support task force. And while the Prius c’s 17-plus cubic feet of cargo space might not fit a mainframe, it’s a volume spacious enough to shuttle just about anything an agent might need – whether optimizing a home theater system or improving Wi-Fi performance or installing a security solution.
Drive long and prosper.

]]>The post 2016 Toyota Prius c Goes Small on Fuel Consumption, BIG on Safety and Bold on Color appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>Toyota gave the Prius c a major styling and interior upgrade for 2015, and so the big news for 2016 is the available Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C), which equips the car with an array of driver-assist technologies: Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Assist, and Automatic High Beams.
Toyota is giving the Prius c an infusion of playfulness for 2016, too, with the Persona Series Special Edition. This distinctive model goes on sale in December and is limited to just 1,500 units. The Persona Series Special Edition comes exclusively in Black, with a choice of two unique color accents that amp up the fun: Electric Lime and Cherry Pearl. The contrast color accents can be found on the lower front grille trim, beneath the headlights and on trim beneath the side windows. The accents also cover the outside power mirrors and interior rear-view mirror shell. You may have seen such paint schemes on customized exotics driven by pro ballplayers, but the effect costs far less on a 2016 Prius c Special Edition, which also includes 15-inch black alloy wheels and a custom “Persona Series” badge.
The Prius c is offered in four numbered grades, and the Special Edition is built on the Two. That means it’s equipped with extras including fabric-trimmed two-tone seats; 6-way adjustable driver’s seat; 60/40 split fold-down rear seats; cruise control, a cargo area cover and engine immobilizer.
Toyota remains the world’s hybrid leader in terms of both models offered and total sales. Since the first generation Prius in 1997 (2000 in the United States), about four million Prius vehicles have been sold worldwide. Prius remains the world’s premier eco-vehicle brand, and has also been instrumental in establishing consumer trust in hybrid technology. (You’re welcome, competitors.)
c Stands for “City,” but “Clever” Works, Too
Urban dwellers like the packaging of the Prius c, which at 157.3 inches long must be one of the easiest-to-park cars on the market. So it’s no wonder that c stands for city. And what could be more appropriate than bright lights in the big city? The Prius c shines the way with standard single LED projector low- and high-beam headlights and LED tail and brake lights. Colors like Electric Lime Metallic, Sun Fusion, Tangerine Splash Pearl and Sparkling Sea Metallic sound tasty enough to drink, and they ensure a glowing appearance in daylight, too.
The Prius c’s clever design strategically locates key drivetrain components to maximize cabin space. The compact gasoline engine, transaxle and power-control unit are optimally placed within the vehicle to help enhance weight distribution and lower the center of gravity. The hybrid battery and fuel tank are positioned beneath the rear seat, ideally distributing their masses within the car’s wheelbase to improve weight distribution and, therefore, handling agility.
As a result, the Prius c offers 104 cu. ft. of total interior volume (87.4 cu. ft. passenger volume plus 17.1 cu. ft. cargo volume). The 35-inch rear legroom rivals some larger compacts.
Prius c Hybrid Technology
In adapting Toyota’s hybrid technology to the Prius c platform, each of the system’s major components benefitted from a design focus to reduce weight, and size while improving efficiency. Toyota’s hybrid technology integrates a gasoline engine, an electric motor within a Continuously Variable Transaxle, a nickel-metal hydride battery, a power control unit (inverter), a DC-DC converter, a step-up converter and a hybrid control computer. The hybrid control computer governs the seamless application of gasoline engine and electric power depending on driving demands and selected drive mode.
The Prius c’s SULEV (Tier 2 Bin 3)-rated 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine utilizes an Atkinson cycle to increase efficiency. The engine produces 73 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque, contributing to a total hybrid system output of 99 hp. Prius c offers three distinct drive modes: Normal, ECO, and EV Mode. ECO reduces overall energy consumption by governing climate control and throttle operation to improve vehicle efficiency. Under certain conditions EV Mode allows the Prius c to be driven solely by electric power for under one mile while remaining below 25 mph.
Small But Mighty
The Prius c’s body structure makes extensive use of lightweight, high-strength steel to help reduce vehicle mass and enhance fuel economy. The strategic use of high-tensile-strength steel contributes to the vehicle’s ability to absorb and disperse impact energies, helping enhance occupant safety. The high level of torsional rigidity afforded by the Prius c body structure allows the suspension to be more optimally tuned for ride and handling.
The body covering that structure slips through the air with a low 0.28 coefficient of drag, the result of extensive aerodynamic features. The Prius c’s lower-body styling is wider below the beltline, featuring sculpted rear flares that express an athletic stance. The cabin combines futuristic design elements in a passenger-friendly environment, and premium touches include piano black, chrome and soft-touch upgraded interior accents on the Prius c Two and above.
The Prius c rides on standard 15-inch wheels — steel with wheel covers for the One or in aluminum alloy for higher trim levels. A 16-inch aluminum alloy wheel option with P195/50R16 tires is available for the Prius c Four.
Standard Safety Features
In addition to TSS-C, the Prius c is equipped with nine airbags strategically located to help protect the driver and passengers in the event of severe collisions. Like all 2016 Toyota models, the Prius c is equipped with the standard Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop technologies.
Four Grades
Choosing a Prius c is as easy as counting to four, which is the number of model grades offered. The well equipped Prius c One comes standard with color-keyed power outside mirrors with turn signal indicators; tilt/telescopic steering wheel with steering wheel controls; air conditioning; remote keyless entry system with illuminated entry; power windows and more. The standard 3.5-in. TFT Multi-Information Display provides the driver with outside temperature display, clock, fuel economy information, cruising range, odometer, trip distance, EV miles driven, Hybrid System Indicator, ECO Savings, ECO Score and energy monitor.
Such a high-tech car of course comes equipped with audio and multimedia to match. Standard Entune Audio includes the Entune Multimedia Bundle with a 6.1-in. touch-screen display; AM/FM CD player (with MP3/WMA playback capability); four speakers; auxiliary audio jack; USB 2.0 port with iPod® connectivity and control; advanced voice recognition and Bluetooth® for hands-free phone capability, phone book access, music streaming, and Siri® Eyes Free.
Prius c Two brings a comprehensive upgrade with fabric-trimmed two-tone seats; six-way adjustable driver’s seat; 60/40 split fold-down rear seats; cruise control, a cargo area cover and engine immobilizer.
Prius c Three layers on the technology with the Smart Key System on the front doors and liftgate, plus with Push Button Start and remote illuminated entry; Touch Tracer Display and Entune Premium Audio with Integrated Navigation and App Suite. Talk about comprehensive multimedia – this Entune system includes everything on the standard setup and adds six speakers; the Entune App Suite; HD radio; HD predictive traffic and Doppler weather overlay; AM/FM cache radio; SiriusXM All Access Radio with three-month complimentary trial and Gracenote® album cover art.
Frugality meets refinement in the Prius c Four, which adds integrated LED fog lights and 15-in. eight-spoke alloy wheels with P175/65R15 tires. The Four also steps up the comfort and convenience with a power tilt/slide moonroof with sliding sunshade; integrated backup camera; SofTex®-trimmed seats, plus heated front seats, steering wheel and outside mirrors.
In addition, an all-new two-tone fabric seat option featuring a Dark Blue Gray/Dark Charcoal color is now available on the Prius c Two and Three models.
Stepping up to the Prius c Three adds the Entune Premium Audio with Navigation and App Suite. The system is equipped with the Entune Multimedia Bundle with a 6.1-inch high resolution touchscreen with split screen display and also includes six speakers, SiriusXM™ All Access Radio with 3-month complimentary trial, and HD Radio™.
The Toyota Entune App Suite is a collection of popular mobile applications and subscription-free data services. Once a smartphone is paired to the vehicle using Bluetooth or a USB cable, Entune apps are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition. Entune offers apps for Bing™, Facebook Places, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, Pandora®, and Yelp™. Real-time data services include traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks.
The Prius c Three also adds the convenience of Smart Key with Push Button Start. And, it gets a feature from the larger Prius line, the Touch Tracer Display. Touch sensors on the steering wheel switches display a duplicate image on the instrument panel, directly in line of sight, reducing driver eye movement for better concentration on the road. Prius c Three also offers optional 15-inch 8-spoke alloy wheels that can be packaged with a power tilt/slide moonroof.
The Prius c Four adds the luxury of SofTex® trimmed seats and steering wheel, heated front seats, an all-new integrated backup camera and a standard moonroof. Prius c Four also continues to offer 16-inch alloy wheels.
The “c” Stands for City. But It Makes Sense Out in the Country, Too.
Toyota designed the Prius c as an urban-friendly runabout, and yes, the “c” stands for city. However, you certainly don’t need to live in a city to reap the benefits of ownership. That 46-MPG highway fuel economy rating is a boon in America’s wide-open spaces, where gas stations are few and far between.
The Prius c is sized like a subcompact outside but has the room of a bona fide compact inside. (It is classified as a compact by the EPA.) Efficient packaging of the hybrid powertrain, battery pack and fuel tank results in 104.5 cu. ft. of total interior volume (87.4 cu. ft. passenger volume, 17.1 cu. ft. cargo volume). Thirty-five inches of rear legroom puts it near the top of the class. The efficient packaging also gives the Prius c a low center of gravity and excellent weight distribution, which translates to fun-to-drive agility. And with NVH improvements for the 2015 model year, the drive experience is even better than before.
Youthful Exterior and Interior Design
The Prius c design projects a fun, youthful attitude that appeals to all ages. It’s also slippery, cheating the wind with a low 0.28 coefficient of drag (Cd). Its lower-body area is wider below the beltline, and combined with very short overhangs and sculpted rear flares, it gives the car an athletic stance.
A wide-ranging color palette provides hues to satisfy every taste. In addition to the aforementioned new colors, the Prius c looks light and lively in Sun Fusion, Moonglow, Blue Streak Metallic, Absolutely Red, Black Sand Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic or Classic Silver Metallic.
What Makes It Go (on So Little Gas)
The Prius c uses its own version of Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive, the technology found in all the brand’s hybrids. The gas engine, electric motor and battery pack are all smaller and lighter than in the standard Prius.
The SULEV (Tier 2 Bin 3)-certified 1.5-liter in-line, 4-cylinder gasoline engine runs on the Atkinson cycle to increase efficiency. It produces 73 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque, contributing to a total hybrid system output of 99 hp. Locating the Prius c’s 144-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack under the rear passenger seat, near the center of the vehicle and low in the chassis, helps achieve a low center of gravity for excellent agility.
Like all Toyota hybrids, the Prius c is a full hybrid, meaning it can run on the gasoline engine alone, battery alone, or a combination of both. Hybrid Synergy Drive combines the output of the gas engine and electric motor through an innovative planetary-type continuously variable transmission.
As on other Toyota hybrids, the Prius c employs a slew of other technologies to curb its fuel usage. Regenerative braking helps to recapture electrical energy under deceleration, sending it to the battery, which helps to reduce fuel consumption. Electric power runs the water pump and power steering assist, eliminating drive belts and even some maintenance needs.
One of the three drive modes, EV Mode can let you drive the Prius c solely on electric power for under one mile while remaining below 25 mph. Where would you do that? Maybe when you think circling city blocks while looking for a parking space would be wasting gas.
There’s also Normal Mode, which is ideal for everyday driving, and Eco Mode, which can help optimize fuel economy when you’re willing to give up some throttle response and don’t need the air conditioner to be ice cold.
Light, Tight and Agile
A stiff body structure, made so by extensive use of lightweight, high-strength steel, helps make the Prius c safe, and also allows suspension tuning that yields an admirable combination of handling responses and ride comfort. Front suspension is a MacPherson strut design, and the rear tuned torsion beam configuration employs coil springs.
The Prius c rolls on 15-inch wheels, available in steel or aluminum alloy, depending on the trim line. The steel wheels come with a newly designed cover for the 2015 model year. A 31.4-ft. turning circle means you might forget how to make K-turns, because you won’t need to. On the top trim line, Prius c Four, 16-inch alloy wheels and quicker steering (2.28 turns lock to lock) ratchet up driving enjoyment.
Big on Safety
The Prius c is equipped with nine airbags, including a driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, driver knee airbag, driver and front passenger seat cushion airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags.
Like all 2015 Toyota models, the Prius c is equipped with the standard Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop technologies.
Limited Warranty and Toyota Care
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for eight years/100,000 miles.
The Prius c also comes standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

]]>California drivers lead the country in adoption of vehicles powered, either wholly or partially, by electricity. 9.3% of vehicles sold in the state run on some form of electricity, according to the report. But despite the growing number of hybrid competitors, Toyota’s hybrid leadership remains unmatched. In fact, one out of every two hybrids in California carries the Prius name plate.
“For many customers Prius is synonymous with hybrid, especially in California,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager of Toyota Motor Sales, Inc. “When the Prius was launched in 2000, many dismissed it as a “science project”, but owners were enamored by its great MPG and lower emissions for a cleaner environment. Over the last decade, Toyota has sold more than 1.5 million Prius vehicles in the U.S. and we’re not slowing down anytime soon.”
Toyota Leads Charge on Wireless Charging
The engineering team never stops looking for innovative ways to support and enhance the experience of those millions of customers. Toyota recently announced verification testing of a wireless battery charging system for Prius Plug-in hybrid. The system, currently being tested in Japan, will charge the vehicle by simply parking over a charge coil system on the ground. No cords, no plugs needed, making it easier for customers to enjoy the estimated 95 mpge* (miles per gallon equivalent).
Using magnetic-resonance technology, the system is designed to counteract electrical transmission issues caused by vehicle misalignment or height differences between the vehicle and charging system. To ensure the vehicle is set for optimum charging, engineers developed a parking assist function that highlights the position of the charge coil within the parking space.
Three Prius Plug-in hybrids will test the wireless charging system at homes in Aichi Prefecture, Japan over the next year. Similar testing is expected in Europe and the U.S. later this year.
*EPA rated mpge calculation based on electric-only and hybrid powertrain operation.

]]>The post 2014 Toyota Prius c Offers 53 MPG City Fuel Economy, Highest of Any Vehicle Without a Plug appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>The Prius c is part of the Prius Family of hybrid models that also includes the Prius, the Prius Plug-in and the larger Prius v. In addition, Toyota offers hybrid versions of its Camry and Avalon sedans and Highlander crossover SUV, making Toyota the leader in the number of hybrid vehicle offerings and sales volume. Beginning with the first generation in 1997 (2001 in the United States), nearly four million Prius vehicles have been sold worldwide. Prius remains the world’s premier eco-vehicle brand, and has also been instrumental in establishing consumer trust in hybrid technology.
Efficient Packaging
The letter “c” represents “city” in the Prius c name, which is appropriate since the car was designed to function as an urban-friendly vehicle with an engaging driving experience and hatchback utility. The scale of the Prius c becomes apparent when compared to the familiar proportions of the midsize Prius. The Prius c is 19.1 inches shorter (157.3 vs. 176.4 inches) and 542 pounds lighter than its midsize Prius sibling (2,500 vs. 3,042 lbs.).
Length | Height | Width | Wheelbase | Curb weight | |
Prius | 176.4 in. | 58.7 in. | 68.7 in. | 106.3 in. | 3,042 lbs. |
Prius c | 157.3 in. | 56.9 in. | 66.7 in. | 100.4 in. | 2,500 lbs. |
The Prius c’s effective packaging design strategically locates key drivetrain components within the chassis to help optimize interior space and vehicle handling. The compact gasoline engine, transaxle and power-control unit are optimally placed within the vehicle to help enhance weight distribution and lower the center of gravity. The hybrid battery and fuel tank are positioned beneath the rear seat, ideally distributing their masses within the car’s wheelbase to improve weight distribution to help enhance handling. As a result of efficient packaging, the Prius c offers 104 cu. ft. of total interior volume (87.4 cu. ft. passenger volume, 17.1 cu. ft. cargo volume). The 35-inch rear legroom dimension is particularly helpful accommodating larger passengers..
Four Grades with Generous Standard Equipment
Available in four trim levels, the 2014 Prius c offers desirable standard and available features at a compelling value. Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, a full color TFT Multi-Information Display and remote keyless entry with illuminated entry. The tilt-telescopic steering wheel features integrated switches for audio, climate and Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability.
The 2014 Prius c meets today’s expectations for onboard infotainment with a USB port and available Display Audio system with Navigation and Entune®App Suite. Toyota’s Entune multi-media system functions through select smartphones to bring applications such as Bing and Pandora® into the vehicle audio display. It also features real time information such as traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports, and stocks.
The 2014 Prius c offers three audio system configurations. A base audio system features either four or six speakers, depending on the model, and includes an AM/FM CD player with auxiliary audio jack, USB port, hands-free phone capability, and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology.
The Display Audio with Navigation and Entune App Suite has six speakers and augments capability with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio capability (with 90-day All Access trial), HD Radio™, and advanced voice recognition.
Prius c Hybrid Synergy Drive Propulsion
In adapting the Hybrid Synergy Drive to the Prius c platform, each of the system’s major components benefitted from a design focus to reduce weight, and size while improving efficiency. The Prius c’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system integrates the operation of components that include a gasoline engine, an electric motor within a Continuously Variable Transaxle, a nickel-metal hydride battery, a power control unit (inverter), a DC-DC converter, a step-up converter and a hybrid control computer. The hybrid control computer governs the seamless application of gasoline engine and electric power depending on driving demands and selected drive mode.
The Prius c’s SULEV (Tier 2 Bin 3)-rated 1.5-liter in-line, four-cylinder gasoline engine utilizes an Atkinson cycle to increase efficiency. The engine produces 73 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque, contributing to a total hybrid system output of 99 hp. Locating the Prius c’s 144-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack under the rear passenger seat, near the center of the vehicle and low in the chassis, helps achieve a low center of gravity for excellent agility.
Prius c offers three distinct drive modes: Normal, ECO Mode, and EV Mode. ECO Mode reduces overall energy consumption by governing climate control and throttle to improve vehicle efficiency. Under certain conditions, EV Mode allows the Prius c to be driven solely by electric power for under one mile while remaining below 25 mph.
Agile Handling and Exemplary Safety
The Prius c’s body structure makes extensive use of lightweight, high-strength steel to help reduce vehicle mass and improve fuel economy. The strategic use of high-tensile-strength steel contributes to the vehicle’s ability to absorb and disperse impact energies, helping enhance occupant safety. The high level of torsional rigidity afforded by the Prius c body structure allows the suspension to be more optimally tuned for ride and handling.
The front suspension uses a MacPherson strut design, and the rear rides on a tuned torsion beam configuration. The coil-spring and shock absorber characteristics of the Prius c have been tuned to enhance handling and ensure smooth ride comfort.
The Prius c comes standard with 15-inch wheels. The 15-inch wheels are available in steel with wheel covers for base models or in aluminum alloy for higher trim levels. A 16-inch aluminum alloy wheel option is available for the Prius c Four model which also delivers enhanced handling thanks to a quicker steering ratio (2.28 turns lock to lock).
Youthful Exterior and Interior Design
The Prius c exterior design helps project a fun, youthful attitude while also yielding excellent aerodynamic performance. Extensive aerodynamic features were engineered into the Prius c to help achieve a low 0.28 coefficient of drag. The Prius c’s lower-body styling is wider below the beltline, featuring sculpted rear flares to help express a sturdy, athletic stance, adding character and conveying an agile driving experience. The Prius c interior combines futuristic design elements in a passenger-friendly environment.
The Prius c is offered in expressive, vibrant exterior colors: Habanero, Moonglow, Summer Rain Metallic, Blue Streak Metallic, Absolutely Red, Black Sand Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic, and Classic Silver Metallic. Sun Fusion is a new color for 2014.
Standard Safety Features
The Prius c is equipped with nine airbags strategically located to help protect the driver and passengers in the event of certain types of accidents. Like all 2014 Toyota models, the Prius c is equipped with the standard Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop technologies.
The Prius c also comes standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The annual ALG Residual Value Awards recognize automakers’ outstanding achievements for vehicles that are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a conventional three-year period. Awards are given in 24 vehicle categories and also for the two brands with the highest overall predicted residual values among all mainstream and all premium vehicles.
Toyota “thanked the academy” for 8 model-level awards, more than any other auto brand. Toyota models taking home awards included:
“Toyota combines its reputation for rock-solid reliability with very restrained use of incentive support and fleet sales across its lineup,” said Eric Lyman, vice president of editorial for ALG. “With this strong foundation, Toyota vehicles are always near the top of their segments with regard to residuals.”
“We pride ourselves on offering the highest quality products at a great value to our customers,” said Bill Fay, Toyota group vice president and general manager. “With some of the best residual values in the industry, Toyota customers can sleep at night knowing that they have made a sound investment.”
Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand, and pricing and marketing strategies represent key factors that impact ALG’s residual value forecasts.

]]>Targeting city-dwelling millennials, the fully integrated campaign leverages a partnership with Hasbro and utilizes The Game Of LIFE across multiple mediums. The campaign embodies the youthful spirit of the vehicle and offers creative content that integrates this iconic childhood game. “The Game of LIFE with Prius c” also takes into consideration that young professional millennials shop and make purchase decisions very differently than other generations of car buyers. Thus, the campaign offers visual tools and easy ways to share digestible information and collect opinions.
“The Prius c campaign acknowledges the fact that buying a car is a big decision, as well as a new experience for many in this demographic,” said Bill Fay, group vice president, marketing, Toyota. “We wanted to give our customers something entertaining and engaging, yet familiar, they could identify with while introducing a vehicle to help them navigate this exciting new chapter in their lives.”
The all-new Prius c joins the Prius Family, which includes the third generation Prius, the Prius v and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The letter “c” in the Prius c moniker represents “city.” It is designed to function as an urban-friendly vehicle with an engaging driving experience, accessible price, a city fuel economy rating of 53 mpg and available convenience and advanced in-car electronics features such as Entune™ technology. Prius c offers the highest city mpg rating of any vehicle without a plug.
For this busy, young professional target, media is always on and content is always queuing. For this reason, the campaign content is designed to be easily watched and shared with their inner circle regardless of the platform it is being viewed on.
Broadcast
Two broadcast commercials, beginning with “Malti-poo” premiering on March 12 and followed by “Dolphin Tattoo” on March 19, feature bright colors and bold imagery evocative of the iconic board game. Both spots combine humor with product messaging and will air during network and cable shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, 30 Rock and The Simpsons, as well as programming on Bravo and ABC Family.
Digital
Digital media elements will also utilize The Game Of LIFE imagery. The “Spin the Wheel” ad units will allow users to spin the familiar color-blocked game wheel to see how Prius c’s features can help them overcome some of life’s dilemmas. Digital programs, including those in partnership with YouTube, Facebook, Hype Machine, Pandora and Hulu, will leverage all digital screens—Web, mobile and tablet—to support the target audience’s media behavior. Additional partner collaborations will feature first-of-their-kind executions, such as a mobile spinwheel integration with Urbanspoon, custom Prius c badges on BuzzFeed, and sponsored free apps available on Amazon.com for the Kindle Fire.
The Prius c YouTube landing page will greet users with a virtual board game where they’ll be able interact with a series of videos offering tips and tricks on navigating life’s more daunting tasks, including:
Later in March, the YouTube page will also host a Prius c overview, Google map tool and more. Additionally, the innovative “Meet the Prius c” vehicle configurator will allow users to customize their own Prius c in a variety of colors and trim levels through a series of uniquely choreographed videos.
Consumer Experiences
Toyota will offer consumers a chance to get behind the wheel and experience the vehicle first-hand. The Prius c will be integrated into a number of lifestyle events, music festival activations and ride and drive experiences in the coming months.
Print & Out of Home
Prius c will appear in a number of print publications, including TIME, People, InStyle and Sports Illustrated. Digital elements will be integrated into portions of the print plan to reflect insights about the multi-tasking, “always on” nature of the Prius c target. In addition to these placements, out of home boards inviting consumers to “meet the Prius c” will be displayed in several markets.
