The post The Car That Changed an Industry: Toyota Marks 20th Anniversary of Prius With Special Anniversary Edition appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>Over the next two decades, Toyota would go on to sell more than 6 million Prius vehicles worldwide and more than 3.6 million total hybrid models (including Lexus) in the U.S. Toyota Prius sales in the U.S. reached 1.9 million through 2019, and the model name became synonymous with hybrid technology. (The original Prius went into production for the Japanese market in 1997.)
All of that is worth commemorating.
And so, Toyota is marking the special anniversary of the groundbreaking Prius, the foundational car of its global hybrid leadership, by offering the Prius 2020 Edition for model year 2021. Toyota will offer 2,020 of these special models, based on the well-equipped XLE FWD grade. Available in a choice of Supersonic Red or the new Wind Chill Pearl, the 2020 Edition features striking black exterior trim and unique features, including a color-keyed rear spoiler.
The 2020 Edition model includes black inserts for the 17-inch alloy wheels, blackout headlight components and trim, B-pillars and mirror housings. Unique to the Prius 2020 Edition are a “2020” insignia key glove/fob and floor mats, as well as black shift knob and interior A-pillar trim and smoked HVAC vents.
The overall look is both sporty and elegant, with just a touch of mischief. But there’s nothing mischievous about a car rated at a manufacturer preliminary-estimated 54 city MPG / 50 highway MPG / 52 combined MPG and equipped as standard with one of the auto industry’s most advanced driver-assist safety systems.
New for 2021: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0
The Prius, which already had Toyota Safety Sense (TSS-P) standard, steps up to the more capable TSS 2.0 for 2021. This latest version of the advanced safety system includes:
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection is designed to offer automatic braking capability, under certain conditions, should the driver not react in time in an emergency situation. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Intelligent Parking Assist are also standard.
Also for 2021, all but the Prius Limited add Android Auto compatibility. (Apple CarPlay compatibility was already standard on 2020 Prius models.)
The Prius mission was right in its name; it is Latin for “first” or “original,” and can also mean “to go before.” Now, look at all the hybrids that have come since.
The Prius is one of 10 Toyota hybrid models, and one of 11 electrified vehicles with Mirai, a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), available for 2021. Others include the first-ever Corolla Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Avalon Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4 Prime and Prius Prime.
The Shape of Progress
Its 2020 livery gives the 2021 Prius an added edge of distinction on the road. The unmistakable Prius silhouette is still the car’s signature design feature, made to cheat the wind with an ultra-low 0.24 coefficient of drag (Cd). An automatic grille shutter reduces aerodynamic drag by closing when airflow to the radiator is not needed.
Standard Bi-LED headlamps and LED rear combination lamps not only provide better light than halogens, but they also reduce energy consumption and give a longer service life. A full-width glass panel beneath the rear spoiler aids rearward visibility while also serving as a distinctive Prius design feature.
The foundation of Prius efficiency is the Toyota Hybrid System II. It operates much in the same fashion as the original hybrid system in the 2001 Prius, but is more compact, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient. In the Prius, the system combines the output of a high-efficiency 1.8-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine with that of two motor-generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The advanced Power Control Unit is the key to extracting the greatest efficiency from the powertrain. In most situations, the Prius launches on battery power alone and then seamlessly starts the gas engine and blends its output once underway, turning it off when its power is not needed.
Thanks to ultra-low internal friction and efficient combustion, the Prius gasoline engine exceeds 40 percent thermal efficiency. The air conditioning system, which uses a quiet electric compressor, works intelligently to maximize energy efficiency, with the Smart-flow (S-FLOW) mode directing airflow only to seated occupants to conserve energy.
More Room Than Some SUVs
The super-low-drag Prius shape is also highly practical. Thanks to its generous cabin room, the Prius is rated as a midsize car by the EPA. The front-wheel drive models, including the 2020 Edition, offer 50.7 cu. ft. of cargo space with the rear seatbacks folded down, which is more than in some small SUVs.
The Prius XLE grade on which the 2020 Edition model is based comes standard with 17-in. alloy wheels, Safety Connect; heated, SofTex®-trimmed 8-way power driver’s seat; SofTex-trimmed heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel; 3-door Smart Key system with Push Button Start; remote illuminated entry, rear wiper, and Qi wireless phone charging tray that accommodates larger phones.
The standard Toyota Audio system includes a 7-in. touch-screen display; AM/FM CD player; 6 speakers; Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility; auxiliary audio jack, one USB 2.0 port with iPod® connectivity and two 2.1-amp USB charge ports; advanced voice recognition; Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability, phone book access and music streaming; Siri® Eyes Free, and an integrated backup camera display.
All Prius models share the familiar central screen interface, a signature feature in every Prius since the original. The 4.2-in. color Dual Multi-Information Display with customizable screens includes Energy Monitor and Hybrid System Indicator with Eco Score, Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, Eco Wallet, and Eco Diary features, plus displays for climate control, driver support systems, audio system content, and the navigation system.
First Generation: A Huge Leap in Fuel Efficiency
That original Prius combined output of a 70-hp gas engine and 44-hp electric drive motor. A second electric motor-generator served as the starter for the gas engine and also generated electricity for the drive motor and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack.
The first Prius achieved EPA estimated 42 city MPG / 41 highway MPG / 41 combined MPG. The higher figure for city driving reflected the hybrid powertrain making greatest use of the battery and electric motor in urban driving. The first Prius also used an auto stop/start system to shut off the gas engine at stoplights under certain circumstances. Such systems have since become commonplace, including for non-hybrids.
Second-Generation: A Huge Leap in Everything
Arriving as a 2004 model, the second-generation Prius arrived introduced a radical-looking and roomy liftback body, which established the basic design silhouette for the Prius going forward. The clever design yielded the room of a midsize sedan in a compact package, also with generous luggage/cargo room.
A new brake-by-wire system improved regeneration and brake feel. A new air conditioning system used an electric compressor, which allowed it to operate without the gas engine running. Even with its gain in power and larger body for the second-generation model, its combined fuel economy jumped by 12 percent to 46 MPG.
Third Generation: 50 MPG and a New Family
The Prius marked its 10th anniversary in the U.S. with an all-new third generation model, gaining more power and higher fuel efficiency. Its 50 combined MPG was a new milestone. This generation also brought new models, including the first Prius Plug-in Hybrid, a new compact Prius c for under $20,000 and a new, larger Prius v with crossover-like room and versatility. Prius models began offering Pre-Collision Braking and other advanced safety tech.
Fourth Generation: More Choices, Higher Efficiency
Based on the Toyota New Global Architecture, the fourth-generation Prius is the most efficient and quietest in its history. The fourth-gen Prius introduced the top-of-line Prius Prime plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the Prius L ECO, and the Prius AWD-e model with all-wheel drive.
Two More Electrified Vehicles to be Revealed
Toyota will introduce two all-new hybrids during the Toyota 2020 New Product Showcase at the link below Monday, May 18 at 11:00 a.m. EDT. The reveal will be hosted by Bob Carter, Toyota’s executive vice president of sales, and Jack Hollis, group vice president and general manager, Toyota division.

]]>With an impressive charge and an EPA-estimated 54 combined mpg on top of that, the new 2020 Toyota Prius Hybrid and 2020 Prius Prime remain automotive titans when it comes to efficiency. Now, with some exciting new features, Prius adds on to its many accolades, rolling out the best-equipped model in its two-decade reign.
So, what can the next generation of Prius driver do in the new Prius (except enjoy fewer trips to the pump)?
Travel Safe and Scenic
Some drivers like to focus on getting from Point A to Point B as efficiently as possible. Others like to see the sights and will tack on a Point C and D. Then there are those who seem to know every attraction in a 50-mile radius and suddenly they are two hours behind, and three ice cream stands into their trip.
With the new standardized Safety Connect on all Prius models, drivers can travel between points with the comfort of knowing they will get to their destination safely, even if that’s Point Z.
Keep Everyone Connected
Everyone has been there: sitting in the back seat, five hours into a road trip. The only thing keeping the energy levels high are the song selections. Fortunately, the perfect song is queued up. Unfortunately, the phone is about to die.
With the addition of two USB ports in the back seat, there are even more ways to charge, connect and keep the road trip moving all the way down Eisenhower’s gift to a restless nation, interstates.
Sync Up With Friends
Speaking of road trips, there’s an unspoken rule that when it comes to hitting the highway, the person in the driver’s seat keeps the car moving safely, while the person in the passenger seat handles everything else.
It’s a big responsibility, but with Apple CarPlay®, which now comes standard on every model for 2020, and standard SiriusXM® and, it’s easy to throw on a playlist and keep the traveling mood rolling. And with a built-in Amazon Alexa feature, the Prius delivers a driving experience that perfectly syncs to how people live and move.
Enjoy Glare-Free Views
Let’s state the obvious — the sun is great. It helps plants grow, it makes the sand warm and it really brings out the color in stained-glass windows. Yet, despite all its splendor, the sun can be a nuisance when it gets in a driver’s eyes.
Fortunately, with a new extended sun visor for the 2020 Prius Prime, drivers can appreciate the sun for all its best traits without having to deal with unwanted glare.
Take the Road Less Traveled
Just imagine: a Prius charging up a rocky road, weaving through a forest path or kicking up clouds on a dusty trail. Seems far-fetched? Not anymore. With AWD-e (all-wheel drive electronic), a new generation of drivers can look forward to reaching all new levels of verticality.
With these new features and more to ignite the senses, the 2020 Prius Hybrid and 2020 Prius Prime offer a whole new driving experience for those who thrive at the intersection of greatness.

]]>Then the Prius would highlight its 58 city / 53 highway/56 combined EPA-estimated mpg (L Eco grade). It would show family pictures, of course, including its segment-exclusive AWD-e model, which features an electronic all-wheel drive system which, at speeds up to 43mph, helps give drivers more control when weather and road conditions are less than ideal.
Prius would finish the conversation by emphasizing that all 2020 models now come equipped with standard Toyota Safety Connect and upgraded audio with Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Previously, Safety Connect was available only on the top-line Limited grade. The system, which includes Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Locator, Roadside Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification, comes with a complimentary three-year trial subscription.
TNGA Means High Strength, Low Weight
The fourth-generation Prius is built around the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), a platform that integrates a high-strength body structure, multi-link rear suspension and a low center of gravity. TNGA endows Prius with a highly engaging driving character combined with exemplary ride smoothness and a quiet cabin.
Hot-stamped and high tensile steels, which allow for intricate forms that are both lightweight and strong, are used extensively throughout the body. Aluminum components, including the hood, rear doorframes, and brake calipers, help keep vehicle weight low. Innovative fastening methods, including laser screw welding and advanced adhesives, contribute to structural strength.
How Prius Operates
The current, fourth-generation Prius continues to be a leader in the hybrid world. Its Hybrid Synergy Drive system combines the output of a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and two motor-generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The Electronically Controlled Brake System coordinates control between the regenerative braking and the vehicle’s hydraulic brake force to provide brake performance. The gasoline engine is itself a paragon of high efficiency. Thanks to ultra-low internal friction and efficient combustion, it exceeds 40 percent thermal efficiency, which is among the highest in the world for a gasoline engine.
The front-wheel-drive (FWD) Prius is a real fuel miser. The L Eco grade has 58 mpg city / 53 mpg highway / 56 mpg combined EPA-estimated fuel economy. The LE, XLE and Limited, which offer more equipment, have 54 mpg city / 50 mpg highway / 52 mpg combined.
The Prius front-wheel drive models use a lithium ion battery, while the AWD-e versions employ a nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery. The latter technology is inherently resilient to extreme temperature change to provide AWD-e models with excellent battery performance in cold-weather conditions. Speaking of cold weather, the XLE grade (both FWD and AWD-e) features upgraded SofTex®-trimmed, heated front seats as standard.
A Design that Just Works
Every facet of the Prius contributes to its stellar fuel economy. The Prius design slips through the air with minimal wind resistance, thanks to an ultra-low 0.24 coefficient of drag (Cd), which is among the lowest of current production passenger cars. An automatic grille shutter reduces aerodynamic drag by closing when airflow to the radiator is not needed. Even the air conditioning system, which uses a quiet electric compressor, works intelligently to maximize energy efficiency. While ensuring passenger comfort, the Smart-flow (S-FLOW) mode directs airflow only to seated occupants to conserve energy.
Standard Bi-LED headlamps and LED rear combination lamps not only provide better light than halogens, but they also reduce energy consumption and give a longer service life. A full-width glass panel beneath the rear spoiler aids rearward visibility while also serving as a distinctive Prius design feature. A backup camera comes standard on all grades, as well.
In addition to exceptional fuel efficiency, something else all Prius models share in common is outstanding versatility. The front-wheel drive models offer up to 65.5 cu. ft. of cargo space with the rear seatbacks folded down, which is more than in some small SUVs. The Prius AWD-e models offer 62.7 cu. ft. of space, the small difference due to accommodating the AWD-e system.
Expanding carrying options, the Prius models offer available Genuine Toyota Accessory cargo crossbars for roof rack attachments, such as for carrying bikes, kayaks, snowboards, or a cargo carrier.
AWD-e Electrifies Traction
In 2019, Toyota introduced the Prius AWD-e, the first-ever Prius with all-wheel drive. While enhancing traction for drivers, the Prius AWD-e upholds the model’s penchant for outstanding efficiency, with 52 mpg city / 48 mpg highway / 50 mpg combined EPA fuel economy estimates. That easily makes Prius AWD-e one of the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive-equipped passenger cars available in the U.S.
The “e” in AWD-e is the key to offering the extra grip of all-wheel drive while still sipping fuel. The automatic, on-demand system does not require a center differential or other torque-apportioning device, nor does it need a front-to-rear driveshaft. Instead, the “e” in AWD-e stands for electronic.
An independent electric, magnet-less rear motor (a Toyota first) powers the rear wheels away from a stop up to 6 mph, and then, when conditions demand, at speeds up to 43 mph. By recognizing when all-wheel-drive is not needed, this intelligent on-demand system runs in front-wheel drive as much as possible to maximize fuel economy.
High Value, High Tech
The Prius debuted revised styling for 2019, as well as the new grade strategy used throughout the Toyota family. The 2020 Prius continues with the L Eco, LE, XLE and Limited grades for front-wheel drive, while offering the AWD-e model in LE and XLE grades. The Supersonic Red and Electric Storm Blue colors that debuted for 2019 also continue for 2020.
All Prius models share interior features including the familiar central screen interface. The 4.2-in. color Dual Multi-Information Display with customizable screens includes Energy Monitor, Hybrid System Indicator and Eco Score, Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, Eco Wallet, Eco Diary, Climate Control, driver support systems, audio system content, and navigation system content. On AWD-e models, the display adds an AWD-e system indicator.
In addition to newly standard Safety Connect, 7-in. Toyota Audio with touch-screen display, Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa for 2020, highlights of the LE include driver’s door Smart Key System, Push Button Start and remote illuminated entry, a rear wiper, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Intelligent Parking Assist.
The standard Toyota Audio system includes the 7-in. touch-screen display, AM/FM CD player, 6 speakers, auxiliary audio jack, one USB 2.0 port with iPod® connectivity and two 2.1-amp USB charge ports, advanced voice recognition, Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability, phone book access and music streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, and an integrated backup camera display.
The XLE grade adds 17-in. alloy wheels (15-in. on XLE AWD-e), SofTex-trimmed heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel, SofTex-trimmed seats including 8-way power and heated front seats, 3-door Smart Key system, and Qi wireless phone charging tray that accommodates larger phones.
The Prius Limited grade features top-of-the-line tech, including an Adaptive Front Lighting System with auto-leveling headlamps; Toyota Premium JBL® Audio with navigation and 11.6-in. touch-screen display. A standard Color Head-Up Display (HUD) shows the speedometer and Hybrid System Indicator in the driver’s line of sight.
Standard Toyota Safety Sense
All 2020 Prius models, including the Prius AWD-e versions, come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P). Using millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor to help detect a pedestrian, a vehicle, lane markers and headlights in the surrounding area, TSS-P provides a comprehensive bundle of active safety features including: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
Because all Prius models, under certain circumstances, can operate in battery mode alone, during which they make little to no noise, they incorporate a Vehicle Proximity Notification System (VPNS) to help alert pedestrians and cyclists.
Peace-of-Mind Warranty Protection
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. A 60-month warranty covers the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for 96 months/100,000 miles.
The Prius also comes standard with ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. For Prius, the complimentary 24-hour roadside assistance is extended to three years (over the standard two years on other models) and unlimited mileage.

Standard Toyota Safety Sense
All 2019 Prius models, including the Prius AWD-e versions, come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P). Using millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor to help detect a pedestrian, a vehicle, and lane markers and headlights in the surrounding area, TSS-P provides a comprehensive bundle of active safety features including: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
Because all Prius models, under certain circumstances, can operate in battery mode alone, during which they make little to no noise, they incorporate a Vehicle Proximity Notification System (VPNS) to help alert pedestrians and cyclists.
High Tech Galore
All Prius models share interior features including the familiar central screen interface. The 4.2" color Dual Multi-Information Display with customizable screens adds an AWD-e system indicator to the menu of displays, which also includes Energy Monitor, Hybrid System Indicator and Eco Score, Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, Eco Wallet, Eco Diary, Climate Control, driver support systems, audio system content, and navigation system content. For the ultimate in high-tech information, the available Color Head-Up Display (HUD) shows the speedometer and Hybrid System Indicator in the driver’s line of sight.

The Limited grade comes standard with the Entune Premium JBL Audio with Integrated Navigation and App Suite, with a large 11.6” HD multimedia display.
2019 Prius Mechanical Features
The Prius AWD-e shares the Hybrid Synergy Drive system with other Prius models. The system combines the output of a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and two motor/generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Electronically Controlled Brake System coordinates control between the regenerative braking and the vehicle’s hydraulic brake force to provide optimal brake performance and feel.
The 2ZR-FXE 1.8-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine is itself a paragon of high efficiency. Thanks to ultra-low internal friction and efficient combustion, it exceeds 40 percent thermal efficiency, which is among the highest in the world for a gasoline engine.
The Prius gets a good share of its fuel efficiency by cheating the wind with an ultra-low 0.24 coefficient of drag (Cd), which is among the lowest of current production passenger cars. An automatic grille shutter reduces drag by closing when airflow to the radiator is not needed. Even the air conditioning system, which uses a quiet electric compressor, works intelligently to maximize energy efficiency. The Smart-flow (S-FLOW) mode directs airflow only to seated occupants to conserve energy and maximize comfort.
Standard Bi-LED headlamps and LED rear combination lamps reduce energy consumption compared to halogens, while giving better light and having a longer service life. A backup camera comes standard on all grades, and a full-width glass panel beneath the rear spoiler aids rearward visibility while also serving as a distinctive design feature.
Toyota New Global Architecture
The fourth-generation Prius is built around the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). The platform introduced a new high-strength body structure, multi-link rear suspension and a lower center of gravity. The result for the Prius is a highly engaging driving experience combined with exemplary ride smoothness and a quiet cabin.
Hot-stamped and high tensile steels, which allow for intricate forms that are both lightweight and strong, are used extensively throughout the body. Aluminum components, including the hood and rear doorframes and brake calipers, help keep vehicle weight low. Innovative fastening methods, including laser screw welding and advanced adhesives, contribute to structural strength.
The Prius also comes standard with ToyotaCare, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. For Prius, the complimentary 24-hour roadside assistance is extended to three years (over the standard two years on other models).

]]>As more than 100 people found out on March 3 at the Sonoma Raceway: really fun.
A broad cross-section of the Silicon Valley community participated in Toyota Onramp 2017, an annual event hosted by Toyota Research Institute (TRI). The cornerstone of the event was the Prius Challenge, where the teams competed to see how efficiently they could drive nine laps at Sonoma Raceway. The competition also featured a special guest, Toyota Chairman of the Board Takeshi Uchiyamada. Chairman Uchiyamada is considered the father of the Prius as he was the Chief Engineer of the first generation Prius.
“TRI’s mission is to improve the quality of life by making use of AI technology. AI can not only improve safety and enhance mobility, but it can also help reduce traffic and time behind the wheel while enhancing fuel efficiency, which is a major theme of Prius Challenge,” said Dr. Gill Pratt, TRI CEO.
In order to facilitate preparation and strategizing for the competition, participants were given access to a driving simulator built by Open Source Robotics Foundation and a strategy editor from Hyperdrive. During the race, teams used a proprietary coaching app to help evaluate and adjust their driving performance in real time to achieve the best fuel economy. Four teams were recognized for their efforts and presented with awards in the following categories — highest overall MPG, best use of machine learning, highest single lap MPG and best race strategy.
Team EcoFlow walked away as the overall Prius Challenge winner, achieving 85 MPG over nine laps.
In addition to the Prius Challenge, Onramp 2017 included the following highlights: an Executive Roundtable discussion with media, the first public reveal of a TRI-developed research vehicle, and rare and exciting driving experiences for participants.
The roundtable featured Chairman Uchiyamada , Dr. Gill Pratt, Dr. James Kuffner, CTO; Dr. Ryan Eustice, Vice President of Autonomous Driving; Mr. Chris Ballinger, CFO and Director of Mobility Services. Earlier in the day, TRI displayed its new advanced safety research vehicle for the first time. The all-new test mule is the next step in Toyota’s 12 years of autonomous technology research and development in the United States, and will be used to explore a full range of autonomous driving capabilities. Participants also had the chance to join a professional driver for a high-speed lap around the track in a Lexus high performance vehicle. The Toyota i-Road, a three-wheel electric concept vehicle, was brought to the Onramp event again to immerse participants fully into its unique driving experiences.

]]>The Prius still sets the bar for hybrid fuel economy, and it’s a high bar, indeed. The 2017 Prius Eco model is anticipated to receive MPG estimates of 58 city / 53 highway / 56 combined MPG EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings. That would be better than any mass-produced passenger vehicle without a plug.
While the auto industry was still grappling with those numbers, Toyota went ahead and announced its commitment to make automatic emergency braking standard on most of its models by the end of 2017. That will put Toyota (and Lexus) four years ahead of the model-year 2022 industry target announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The 2017 Prius helps fulfill that commitment by making Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) driver assist technology standard on all model grades. (It had been an option on select grades for 2016.) Using millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor to help detect pedestrians, vehicles, and lane markers in the surrounding area, TSS-P is designed to identify obstacles and automatically apply braking if necessary to help avoid collisions. TSS-P includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection; Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist; Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Automatic High Beams.
The Toyota Prius delivers mid-size room in a compact package, with a design that, while bolder than before, conveys an identity that’s instantly recognizable the world over. Offered in six model grades, the Prius caters to a wide variety of tastes and needs. The premium interior is distinguished by a wrap-around dash design, form-hugging seats, easy-to-use controls and enhanced visibility. The Prius is also the most connected and entertaining, with three Entune Multi-media systems available.
Breakthrough Efficiency
As impressive as Prius fuel economy has always been, Toyota relentlessly pursues ever-higher efficiency goals with each new design generation. The latest version of its Hybrid Synergy Drive combines the output of a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and two motor/generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT). Shift-by-wire technology, which uses electric signals to transmit shift operations, offers light, fingertip operation from the dash-mounted shifter.
The fourth-generation Prius uses smaller, lighter hybrid components than before, including a lithium-ion hybrid battery that replaces the nickel-metal hydride battery (excluding the Prius Two standard grade). The battery’s smaller size and lower profile allow it to be packaged under the rear seat, rather than beneath the luggage area, yielding more cargo space.
The Prius driver can choose between selectable Normal and Power driving modes. Normal balances both fuel economy and acceleration feel; Power prioritizes acceleration feel. Most 2017 Prius models are expected to receive estimated economy ratings of 54 MPG city / 50 MPG highway / 52 MPG combined – on regular-grade gasoline. The Prius Eco grade anticipates higher ratings thanks to lighter weight and further optimized aerodynamics.
The Prius conserves energy even when it’s slowing down. The regenerative brake system switches the motor into a generator to recover the wheels’ kinetic energy as electrical power, storing it in the hybrid battery.
The Engine That Could – And Does
The Prius’ internal combustion engine is a star player on the Hybrid Synergy Drive team. The 2ZR-FXE 1.8-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine achieves groundbreaking 40+ percent thermal efficiency, thanks to reduced internal friction and improved combustion. It’s also quieter than the previous generation’s engine. Toyota found extra efficiency by cooling the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, and by using exhaust heat recirculation to quickly bring engine coolant up to optimal temperature.
Because the Prius, under certain circumstances, can operate in battery mode alone, it incorporates a Vehicle Proximity Notification System to help alert pedestrians and cyclists. A small in-vehicle speaker emits a low but noticeable warning tone when traveling below approximately 15 mph, and the sound changes with vehicle speed.
Against the Wind, and Winning
Whether you call the new-generation Prius design modern, dramatic or emotional, it sure is smart. The Triangle Silhouette that defined the second and third-generation Prius models brings a sense of familiarity, now blended with a sense of daring.
Remember when “longer, lower, wider” described gas-guzzling leviathans? For the newest-generation Prius, those adjectives instead define a spacious, comfortable vehicle that cheats the wind without cheating passengers out of room. The vehicle’s 0.24 coefficient of drag (Cd) is among the lowest of current production passenger cars.
That’s achieved not only with the overall vehicle shape, but also details such as an automatic grille shutter that reduces drag by closing when airflow to the radiator is not needed. Aero stabilizing fins on the underfloor covers, front quarter window garnish and tail lamps likewise keep air moving in a smooth pattern. Front spats and covers on either side of the fuel tank help prevent airflow agitation by the tires and suspension.
See and Be Seen
The newest Prius design, while sleeker than before, does not compromise driver visibility – and in fact optimizes that attribute. Standard Bi-LED headlamps dominate the striking front fascia, and the rear combination lamps echo the design theme. Automatic headlamp leveling keeps the beams focused on the road and helps prevent blinding drivers in oncoming vehicles.
The newest design gives a clearer view to the rear, thanks to larger rear door glass and larger fixed rear quarter windows. As on the previous model, a full-width glass panel beneath the rear spoiler aids rearward visibility. A backup camera comes standard on all grades.
Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA)
Beneath the Prius’ dramatic bodylines is the solid foundation of Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA). In this current-generation Prius, the platform introduced a new high-strength body structure, the model’s first double-wishbone style multi-link rear suspension and a lower center of gravity. All combine to yield a highly engaging driving experience while also providing a markedly smoother and quieter ride than the previous generation.
The newest-generation Prius is 2.4 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and 0.8 inches lower than the previous generation. The gasoline engine, electric motor and seating positions were lowered to increase front and rear head room while at the same time achieving a low, aerodynamic stance.
The TNGA platform’s structural strength greatly contributes to the high level of handling responsiveness, steering feel and ride quality in the Prius. Hot-stamped and high tensile steels, which allow for intricate forms that are both lightweight and strong, are used extensively throughout the body. Aluminum components, including the hood and rear doorframes and brake calipers, help keep vehicle weight in check. Innovative fastening methods, including laser screw welding and advanced adhesives, contribute to structural strength.
Sport Sedan Suspension
You’ll find double-wishbone style multi-link rear suspension on the best sport sedans, and it can work the same wonders for handling and ride quality in a super-efficient hybrid, too. Toyota used it to replace the torsion beam type suspension used on the previous Prius generation, and the trailing-arm design also allows increased luggage space.
The Prius Touring takes full advantage of the suspension’s inherent handling benefits by using special tuning and 17-inch wheels with 215/45R17 tires. On other grades, light-alloy 15 x 6.5-inch wheels wear aerodynamic wheel covers to reduce drag and wind noise. On all Prius models, low-rolling resistance tires are optimized for grip.
Step on the brake pedal in the Prius, and instead of a cable, your foot pressure signals the Electronically Controlled Brake System to apply appropriate braking force through the active hydraulic brake booster. The system coordinates control between the hybrid system’s regenerative braking and the hydraulic brake force to provide optimal performance and feel.
Lots of Information, Easy to See
The futuristic theme carries into the Prius cabin, where the intuitive concept of previous models continues, anchored by a central gauge panel. The panel features dual 4.2-inch full-color TFT (Thin Film Transistor) multi-information displays, and their content can be changed using steering wheel controls. The display background color changes depending on the selected drive mode. Select Power mode, and the background appropriately glows red. Choosing Normal mode brings on a soothing blue glow.
The display provides a multitude of readouts for hybrid energy information and much more, and the driver can choose how much information to receive by selecting either Simple or Segmented display modes. Simple mode shows a large vehicle speed display, remaining fuel, drive mode indicator, outside temperature, odometer functions and cruising range. The Segmented display presents more detail about hybrid operation, including instantaneous fuel economy, hybrid battery state of charge and a suite of ECO functions to encourage efficient driving habits.
A driving support display shows the status of features such as radar cruise control, Lane Departure Alert and other systems.
The Shhhhh Factor
The Prius’ hybrid powertrain runs quietly, and aerodynamic design blunts wind noise. Toyota, though, went above and beyond to make the current Prius exceptionally quiet on the road. A sound-insulating laminated windshield and numerous sound absorbers in the dash structure reduce noise intrusion. Higher-grade models feature sound-insulating laminated front door glass, as well. The carpeting is backed by a thick silencer pad, and a urethane-based headliner, along with the ribbed structure of the front pillar trim, helps absorb sound.
Keeping it Cool
Depending on model grade, the tilt and telescoping steering wheel comes wrapped in urethane or SofTex® synthetic leather that features surface temperature-regulating properties to make it feel more comfortable in hot or cold weather.
Even the air conditioning system, which uses a quiet electric compressor, shows off its smarts. The Smart-flow (S-FLOW) mode directs airflow only to seated occupants to conserve energy and maximize comfort. In the Prius Eco grade, heat-insulating IR-cut windshield glass substantially reduces the transmission of infrared rays, enhancing interior comfort and also reducing the air conditioning system’s workload. In cold weather, a ceramic-type heater warms the cabin quickly.
Entune® Multi-media and Wireless Charging
The Prius connects with your devices and music through its Entune Audio systems. If you’ve got a Qi-compatible phone or other device, you can leave the charging cords at home, because the 2017 Prius offers wireless charging (except base Prius Two grade). Simply place a compatible device on the console pad to initiate charging.
The standard Entune Audio system on the Prius Two and Prius Two Eco grades includes the Entune Multi-media Bundle with a 6.1 in. touch-screen display, AM/FM CD player, six speakers, auxiliary audio jack, USB 2.0 port with iPod® connectivity and control, advanced voice recognition, hands-free phone capability, phone book access and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology, plus Siri® Eyes Free mode and an integrated backup camera display. Yes – all that, standard.
On all other grades, the standard Entune Premium Audio with Integrated Navigation system and Entune App Suite® includes all of those features plus a 7.0-inch high resolution touch-screen with split screen display, Entune App Suite, HD radio, HD predictive traffic and Doppler weather overlay, AM/FM cache radio, SiriusXM All Access Radio with 3-month complimentary trial and Gracenote album cover art.
As part of a package, the Prius Four grade exclusively offers the Entune Premium JBL® Audio system with Integrated Navigation and App Suite. To all features of the base and mid-grade systems, it adds 10 JBL GreenEdge speakers in eight locations.
The Entune® App Suite includes Destination Search, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, Pandora®, Facebook Places, Yelp and Slacker Radio plus real-time info including traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks. Access to Entune® services is subscription-free.
Better Than Valet Parking
Parking doesn’t get much easier than with available Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA). When activated, the system is designed to use ultrasonic wave sensors to automatically steer the Prius into – or out from — parallel parking spaces, or reverse it into perpendicular space. The Toyota-first Intelligent Clearance Sonar provides visible and audible warnings if the driver gets too close to detected obstacles on the vehicle’s sides – an excellent tool for navigating tight parking garages, for example.
A full array of supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbags includes a driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System; driver and front passenger side airbags; full-length curtain airbags; a driver knee airbag, and a front passenger seat cushion airbag.
Peace of Mind Warranty Protection
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation.
