Kazuo Ohara is president and chief executive officer of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS) with responsibility for sales, marketing, distribution and customer service of Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles in the United States. He also serves in a global advisory capacity as managing officer for the parent company, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in Japan.
Ohara joined TMC in April 1980 and worked in the company’s sales and planning operations in Japan. From 1988 to 1990, he was posted to New Zealand. In 1998, he oversaw product planning for the original Lexus RX (known as the Harrier in Japan). He also participated in planning for the 2005 launch of the Lexus brand in the Japanese market.
He was general manager, Operations Department, Overseas Planning in September 2003 when he was transferred to TMS in the United States to become vice president, Corporate Planning. He soon added the University of Toyota to his responsibilities and was promoted to group vice president at TMS. In April 2004, he was put in charge of overseeing truck operations for the Toyota Division at TMS. He was promoted to senior vice president and chief coordinating officer and became a member of the TMS Executive Committee in August 2005.
In June 2008, Ohara returned to Japan as general manager of the Lexus Product and Marketing Planning Division at TMC, where he was in charge of global product planning, pricing and sales for the Lexus brand. He was named a managing officer of TMC in June 2010 and deputy chief officer of the Lexus Group in April 2011. He was named executive vice president of Lexus International in June 2012.
Ohara earned a bachelor’s degree in law from Osaka University.
